CARNIA CYCLING TOUR
4 cycling tourism routes
among nature, history, and culture.
An exciting experience among the mountains of CARNIA
Nature and Gastronomy
km 38 - elevation gain 896 m
Ampezzo
Start from the village square, the initial part of the route is downhill with slight climbs, then in the second part it climbs but not gradually.
You pedal through meadows and woods, encountering the Tagliamento River in particularly interesting views, which also intersect with history.
(recommended for those using both classic MTB and e-MTB)
We are in the town of Ampezzo, in the Val Tagliamento, linked to history as it was, for a short period, in the spring of 1944, the "capital" of the Free Zone of Carnia. From here the route starts, along which we can visit the Geological Museum of Carnia and the Davanzo Art Gallery, but also numerous and characteristic local churches (the one in Mediis is interesting) and other pieces of history with the Vallo del Littorio in Preone, not forgetting the full contact with nature in the meadows and woods of the valley.
Nature
km 39 - elevation gain 901 m
Preone
Starting from the Town Hall of the small Carnic center, after a few kilometers of ups and downs, you reach the truly challenging climb (2km at 12%), which leads to the long false flat of the Chiampon Valley. Then everything becomes much easier, with panoramas and places of particular beauty, discovering "forgotten" villages and then climbing back up to discover marble and Verzegnis.
(recommended for those using e-mtb).
He naturally departs and arrives in the small village of the valley, located on the right bank of the Tagliamento, small but not lacking in cultural interests. The museum “Preone 200 million years” which houses fossil findings of great interest such as Megalancosaurus preonensis or the pterosaur Preondactyulus buffarini, is one of these and to complete everything the educational trail “Stavoli Lunas”. But this route is particularly characterized by nature, it is the one of the 4 routes with the most dirt road to tackle (forest road) (for those not prepared there is always the state road - descent from Sella Chiaunzutan) but it is also the one with the beautiful Arzino Waterfalls and the splendid Chiampon Valley to reward the effort of the climbs. (it is the one with the most climbs)
Craftsmanship and Architecture
km 47 - elevation gain 785 m
Ovaro
From Ovaro, immediately head to tackle the Val Pesarina, in order to visit first the hamlet of Pesariis in Prato Carnico, a characteristic village and the town of clocks, where time is never enough to visit it
(recommended for those using both classic MTB and e-MTB)
Start from Ovaro, right from where the well-known (for cyclists) and terrible Zoncolan climb begins, same route but different paths. Many proposals for this tour, from the church of San Martino with the excavations of the Paleochristian church, and the Wood and Venetian Sawmill Museum in Loc di Aplis immersed in the greenery of the wildlife park. But the part that certainly requires more time is Pesariis, with its clock museum, the Casa Buseschi museum, as well as the 15 splendid clocks placed in the streets of the village. But it doesn't stop here, with the image of Carnia, in our pedaling we will also encounter the Ancient Village of Raveo, all to be explored in its streets and districts.
Art and Culture
km 49 - elevation gain 707 m
Tolmezzo
A menu of nature but lots of art and culture to visit, a route on roads with limited traffic and many cycle paths.
(recommended for those using both classic MTB and e-MTB)
The route starts from the main city of Carnia and crossroads of the Carnic valleys, Tolmezzo. Art, history, and culture characterize this ride. A tour that will take you to the Carnic Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions "Gortani", the Iulim Carnicum Museum, and the Roman forum of Zuglio, but will also immerse you in modern art at the Art Par Marzona, and enjoy the beauty of Lake Verzegnis enclosed in the enchanting nature that surrounds it.
